What is PAYE Payroll?
Pay As You Earn (PAYE) is HMRC’s system for collecting Income Tax and National Insurance directly from employees’ wages. As an employer you must: calculate deductions, issue payslips, submit Real Time Information (RTI) returns, and pay HMRC on time. Failure to do so can trigger fines, interest and unhappy staff.
How PAYE works in the UK
- 1
Gross pay calculated for each pay period.
- 2
Statutory deductions applied – Income Tax, NI, student loans, pensions and attachment orders.
- 3
RTI file delivered to HMRC on or before pay-day.
- 4
Net pay released to staff and a P32 produced for your finance team.
