What is Umbrella Payroll?

It’s like PAYE but with extra benefits.

Umbrella payroll refers to a system where a third-party company, known as an umbrella company, acts as the employer for contractors who work on temporary contract assignments, usually through a recruitment agency.

Umbrella payroll is used by many recruitment agencies and businesses as an alternative way of paying employees/contractors. This means that you are contracted to the umbrella company and they take the legal responsibility for this employment

The umbrella company invoices the recruitment agency (or sometimes directly the end client) for the work completed by you, the contractor. Once the invoice is paid, the umbrella company processes the payment deducting necessary taxes (income tax, National Insurance contributions) and their fee, before passing the remaining salary to the contractor.

Anyone can qualify for PAYE umbrella, as long as you aren’t operating as a limited company.

Contractors employed by an umbrella company may receive some employment benefits such as holiday pay, sick pay, and pension contributions. However, they also have to pay the umbrella company’s fee, usually a fixed amount per timesheet or a percentage of their earnings.
